The rest of the day was functional - efficient. I was distracted but managed to complete everything on my list. Simon and Henry's wedding cake was almost complete. They had decided to remove the Tower of Pisa. It just wasn't necessary. The change turned the cake from cutesy to charming. There were six colorful alternating tiers of vanilla mousse and chocolate. The fondant had been dyed and lacquered for the sashes. The only thing left to do was to make tiny white flowers - three hundred sixty-two of them.

Jordan, bless her heart, tried her best to draw me out of my funk. She asked about the meeting with Stitch. The moment I got back to the bakery and she got me alone, she dropped the question. "Everything go okay with Ramirez?"

I'd been feeling like I was in a bubble of water since leaving Marc's. My thoughts were slow. My voice sounded garbled to my ears. "Yeah. Fine."

"So, he's satisfied right? No need to come dragging around anymore?"

"Nope."

"Nope, he’s not coming around anymore or nope this aren’t finished?”

Tossing her a quick glance, I turned back to the counter. The dishwasher had just shut off. I needed most of the stuff inside. I unlatched the door then stepped away quickly to avoid the burst of hot steam that rushed out.

“Stitch Ramirez won’t come back around here. As for everything else, well, there’s been some progress but I’m still not in the clear.” My answer was purposely evasive.

She rubbed the back of her hand beneath her chin, leaving a trail of flour. Even though we were alone, she lowered her voice and whispered. "You seem a little ... off."

The answer came swiftly. We both knew it was a lie. "Yup. Doing great."

She started to say something, but the door chimed. I looked at the clock and shook my head. We'd officially closed five minutes ago but neither one of us thought to lock the front door or turn on the sign.

"I got it," Jordan called.

Nodding, I dropped a baking sheet on the counter and headed toward my office remembering something I’d forgotten to do. Since returning to the store earlier that day, I'd spent most of the evening tucked away in my office. The visit to Marc's office pushed up my date to leave. Supplies needed to be ordered. The storeroom would be full before I left. Invoices were paid, in full. I'd moved extra money into the store's account. In addition to the bakery, I decided to leave Jordan the house as well. She could live there or sell the place. The decision was up to her. I wrote a quick letter about the shift in ownership but that would be it for an explanation. The less she knew, the better.

I heard her greeting from the front of the store. "Hi. What can I get you?"

"I need something super sweet. Enough sugar to keep me wired for the next few hours."

The voice stopped me. Throwing the papers in my hand on the desk, I slammed an open drawer shut before stomping through the kitchen toward the front.
